GLA:D Program

Exciting news! Hinterland Physio Group is proud to announce that we are now offering the GLA:D program! GLA:D®, from ‘Good Life with osteoArthritis in Denmark’, is a group education and exercise program developed by researchers in Denmark for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis symptoms. It was brought to Australia in 2016 to help Australians with hip or knee osteoarthritis.

This education and exercise program reflects the latest evidence in osteoarthritis (OA) research. It also includes feedback from people with OA and trainers on what works in the real world to help patients manage OA symptoms.

The GLA:D® Australia program consists of:

·       An initial appointment to explain the program and measure your current functional ability

·       Two education sessions which teach you about OA, its risk factors, treatment options, and self- management strategies.

·       Group exercise sessions twice a week for six weeks to improve your control of the joint, your confidence in the joint and your strength

·       A review at 3-months with your clinician to discuss progress, goals, and re- measure your functional ability

·       Completion of a questionnaire on registration with the program, and then again at 3 and 12 months after registration to measure changes in areas such as pain, function, quality of life, and medication use.

·       Although the GLA:D program is delivered in a group format, the program is customizable, so each individual receives the best possible treatment! In Australia in 2022, the average age for all participants was 65 years, however the youngest was a 23 year-old and the oldest was a 94 year-old!

The results of the GLA:D program in Australia have been remarkable. After three months, 46% of the knee participants and 41% of the hip participants reported that they were using less or much less pain or anti-inflammatory medication. After the GLA:D® program;

-        Average knee/hip pain intensity decreased by 31% for knee participants and 28% for hip participants.

-       Average walking speed increased by 14%.

-       87% of participants were satisfied or very satisfied with the GLA:D® Program, and 90% of participants use what they have learned in GLA:D® at least once a week.

-        3 in 4 knee participants who desired surgery prior to the program had not received surgery and no longer desired surgery.

-       5 in 8 hip participants who desired surgery had not received surgery and no longer desired surgery
